The Lady Panthers take a record of six wins and 11 losses overall and five wins and six losses in the Bull Run District to this Thursday’s home contest and last regular season game against Clarke County.
Stipulating that her information wasn’t absolutely up to the minute, coach Theresa McLawhom gave the district rankings at Strasburg first. Stonewall second, Clarke third, George Mason fourth and Rappahannock fifth.
The Panthers lost to the Mason Mustangs, a team they beat at home earlier ir a 49-47 double overtime thriller, in Falls Church last Thursday, 26-33. Both teams played sloppily, according to coach McLawhorn, who noted that the half time tally was a low 1518. “We had a chance in the final minutes. We were hanging in there at 23-25 but they pulled away to beat us, 26-33. My girls just didn’t play as a team.”
Butler was high scorer for RCHS with nine.
“We needed to beat George Mason to put us in fourth place in the district and give us our first tournament game at home. Now it looks like we’ll be on the road. But that’s history now,” she added. However, McLawhorn still held out a chance for the Panthers to grab that fourth ranking, depending on how this Tuesday’s games went and the outcome of Thursday’s final regular season contes with Clarke. “It could be a very important game.”
On Monday night over the mountain, the Panthers were blown off the court by Luray’s Bulldogs, coached by former RCHS boys varsity helmsman Jim Logan. The home team blanked Rappahannock in the first quarter, 17-0. “But then Mo Turner brought the team back together. Mo, Connie Compton, Natalie Butler, Donna Atkins and Kim Settle got things clicking in the second quarter to keep the game honest.” But despite their efforts, it was still a lopsided 64-49 loss for the Panthers. “We were outclassed and outplayed,” McLawhorn said, noting that Jennifer Tutt, Luray’s sharp shooting senior, tallied 31 points.
On Rappahannock’s side, Turner was high with 21, her best scoring night ever. Natalie Butler had 11 points, the only other Panther in double figures.
