Scooter stared out the bedroom window, waiting for Tommy’s voice, and still chewing the toy soldier. Then he heard a car start. He saw men shut the coffin lid. but before they did he saw Tommy’s face. Scooter dove out the window onto the porch roof then to the ground. He chased the slow string of cars as they wound around the block and to the edge of town.

Tommy’s parents stayed until the grave was filled. They were about to leave when Mr. Marshall spotted Scooter at the cemetery's

Look Janet! Scooter! Hey, that’s Scooter, isn’t it? He must’ve gotten out. Scooter! Here, boy!”

for the first time in his life. Scooter disobeyed. “Maybe we should let him stay. Frank. We can come back tomorrow.”

After they left. Scooter went to the little grassless plot md lay there, nose on the ground, tin soldier under one paw. That night it rained. Scooter’s fur hung limply and water dripped from his drooping ears.
