Clarence Ewing
Former County Surveyor
Clarence William Ewing, 79, of Harrisonburg, died Monday, October 24, 1982, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.
He was born April 26, 1904, in Harrisonburg, son of the late Issac S. and Lelia Hite Ewing. He was a graduate of Carnegie Institute with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he practiced as engineer in New Hampshire, North Carolina and Virginia. During the 1940’s he taught at VMI. He was a registered professional engineer and certified land surveyor and was associated with Chespeake Western Railroad as civil engineer. He also practiced engineering and surveying independently in Harrisonburg lintil his retirement.
He was Rappahannock County’s surveyor during the late 1920’s.
Ewing was elected and served on the Harrisonburg City Council from 1952-1962. He was a life member of American Society Civil Engineering and Kiwanis Club. He was past elder and trustee of Eirst Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg anti served as trustee and board member of Woodbine Cemetery.
On September 15, 1974, he married the former Jane Schwartz of Sperryville, who survivors.
Also surviving are three children, Elizabeth Ann Homan of Toms River, New Jersey, Sallie E. Funkhouser of Harrisonburg and John William Ewing of Annandale; six grandchildren and one sister, Elizabeth E. Chambers of Harrisonburg.
Graveside services were conducted on Wednesday at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg by the Rev. Joseph Sefcik.
Arrangements were by Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Hospice Unit of Rockingham Memorial Hospital or the F irst Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg.
