Statistics released by the Piedmont
Environmental Council showed Rappahannock to be the only one of nine counties in the area to lose population during the previous decade (1959-1969). The 3.1 percent decrease was blamed on farmers going out of business and moving away. During the time studied, 42 percent of all the county’s farmers had stopped growing crops and 15 percent of the county’s farm acreage was taken out of production.
The PEC reported that farming simply was not profitable with the net profit per acre in Rappahannock calculated at just $3.
