Book prices Rental fees and purchase prices for books at Rappahannock County Elementary School will be unchanged this school year. All hardback textbooks will be rented for $4 per school year, except shorthand books, which must be bought. Other purchase costs include an accounting workbook (chapters 1-30, $7.75), general business workbook ($4.50), Proc. for modem office work set ($6), Shorthand (Gregg Shorthand and Gregg Dictation both $12), driver education book (10th grade, $7) and a ninth grade first aid book ($5.50). Fees, rentals and purchases may be made Aug. 22 at the school between 2-5 p.m. and again betwen 6-8 p.m. Any student can buy a textbook any time during the school year. Other fees being collected include a gym locker fee ($2), gym uniform of shirt ($4.50), shorts ($3.25) and socks ($1.50), optional sweat pants ($12.50), art ($10), home economics ($7), shop ($10), school insurance ($7.50), teacher lunches ($1.30), student lunches (90 cents), reduced price (40 cents), behind-the-wheel driver education ($25) and hall lockers ($2).
• Gets tax credit The Child Care and Learning Center of Washington has qualified for and been granted a Neighborhood Assistance tax credit. The tax credit under the Neighborhood Assistance Act, developed by the General Assembly, allows state tax credits to businesses which invest money and ' resources in projects that improve the quality of life for Virginia’s impoverished citizens. The Child Care and Learning Center is trying to raise money for construction of a new child care facility.
The organization has offered services for nine years but its present space does not meet state licensing requirements and will be closed if a new facility cannot be found. Already the center has raised $215,000 of the $325,000 needed. Some 25 projects statewide qualified for the tax credit during the most recent application period. Businesses which contribute to any of the 25 identified projects between July 1, 1985, and June 30, 1986, will qualify for state income tax credits for 50 percent of their total contribution. A maximum of $175,000 in credits is allowed in one year for any business. The law also allows for credits to be carried over for the next five succeeding tax years. The Child Care and Learning Center provides child day care, developmental programs, speech therapy and tutoring for the learning disabled, in addition to providing enrichment programs for children and adults.
• Lunch program limits Rappahannock County Public Schools has set its policy for offering free or reduced-priced lunches. The policy, served under the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program, will be administered by the school principal. Appeals can be filed with Robert Esterbrook, P.O. Eligibility requirements for students qualifying for free lunches include: Household size, maximum income 1 person, $6,825 2 persons, $9,165 3 persons, $11,505 4 persons, $13,845 5 persons, $16,185 6 persons, $18,525 7 persons, $20,865 8 persons, $23,205 For each additional household member, add $2,340 Requirements for students qualifying for reduced-price lunches include: Household size, income 1 person, $6,826-9,713 2 persons, $9,166-13,043 3 persons, $11,506-16,373 4 persons, $13,846-19,703 5 persons, $16,186-23,033 6 persons, $18,526-26,363 7 persons, $20,866-29,623 8 persons, $23,206-33,023 For each additional household member, add $3,330.
• LFCC needs instructors Lord Fairfax Community College is looking for part-time credit and non-credit course instructors. The college will conduct interviews for openings on Aug. 22 in two 90-minute sessions beginning at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m. Instructors are needed in arts and sciences for oncampus credit courses. Instructors are also needed in all subject fields for off-campus credit courses to be offered in Front Royal and Warrenton, as well as in Woodstock, Luray and Mt. Jackson.
