up in June
Virginians are buying more new cars than they did this time a year ago, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
In June, the DMV registered 40,075 new cars, some 5.3% more than in June of 1984. It marks the sixth consecutive month that new car registrations exce eded the 1984 totals.
However, the titling of all cars, new and used, fell slightly this year, from 144,815 in June 1984 to this year’s total of 144,339.
For the first six months of 1985, though, vehicle registration rose some 8.5%. Some 843,846 cars have been registered so far this year.
New car registration is up even higher. Some 14% more new cars have been registered so far in 1985 than in 1984.
Through the end of June, when the fiscal year ended, the DMV collected $132 million in sales and use taxes, $16 million more than in fiscal 1984.
