He was the only child of Annie Essie Jett, black, and Will Miller, who was white. Bill’s mother died the day after his birth. For awhile, Bill stayed with his grandfather, Gus Jett. Bill did not relate what became of his grandfather or why none of his family reared him.
At any rate, at a very early age, he was without family or a place to stay, and a pauper.
Bill related to me in an interview in July 1983 being a resident for a short time at Ben Venue when Mr. Eddie Green took over. This was after leaving Tick Ridge and the old Sloan Place, which was a room-sized log cabin.
During Bill’s stay, which was short as conditions would not allow Mr. Green to keep him, he tried to go to school but the teacher told him he was too nearsighted and would not learn.
