I shoved the scale under my arm - didn’t even wait for a brown paper bag - and held the door for the last three guys sweating and groaning under the weight of the gym set.

An electronic scale - as pompous and uppity as all get-out — makes it harder to cheat on your weight.

With the spring type scale, you can lean on the sink and drop a quick 15 pounds within a matter of seconds, go back in front of the tube and finish that milk shake that was calling out your name.

Or, you can cheat in the other direction, the way I did when I was a teenager boasting the muscular tone of a Q-tip.

By pulling up on the sink, or placing the scale on a hardwood floor, it was very possible to put on a few extra “el-bees.” In the case of extreme self-confidence problems, I could place the scale on a concrete floor and really bulk up.

With an electronic scale, which operates with batteries and actually informs you when to step on, you practically have to pull the sink off the wall to effect any change in your weight.

And there aren’t any different locations where you can stand to alter your weight. At least I haven’t found them yet.

The biggest factor in dieting is seeing a definite change in your weight. I’ve learned a few things about dieting from my electronic scale. We can call them the Cousin Paulie’s Guide to Weight Reduction.
