For almost 30 years the Newstead Farm of Upperville has been one of the leading consignors at the Spa sales. This year the farm was once again among the top 10 with 10 yearlings selling for $2,769,000, for an average of $276,900.
This year, however, will be the last year that Newstead consigns yearlings to the Saratoga sales.
As the first of Newstead’s yearlings was led into the sales ring, FasigTipton Sales Company chairman, John M.S. Finney announced that the Newstead Trust, which manages the farm, has decided to liquidate the trust beginning with its yearlings. The remainder of the farm’s horses, primarily broodmares and weanlings, will be sold at Fasig-Tipton’s Lexington, Ky., sales arena on November 10. (See complete story in A-Section).
The announcement was greeted by a gabble of comments from the audience in the arena as the first of Newstead’s yearlings, a The Minstrel filly, passed under Mr. Retier’s hammer.
Newstead’s highest-priced yearling here was a filly by In Reality out of Mrs. Warren and was also bought by Sheik Maktoum’s Darley Stud Managment for $1.25 million.
