(fox scented rags) and watch their hounds follow them. I do this once a year but my hounds are not trained for it. I enter my hounds in field trials. A field trial is a three-day competition. Hounds are cast at daybreak and run five hours each day. They have to be on their own at this time. They are awarded points for hunting, trailing, speed, drive and endurance.
They are scratched for loafing, babbling and running other game. Deer are bad on foxhounds. Nobody wants their hound to run deer, but it happens. Deer carry a hound long distances. The hound becomes thin, gets scratched up and usually wears the pad from its feet. When a hound runs a fox, he stays in good shape and looks good.
At the end of the field trial, a champion is declared. My grandfather, Clifton Clark, who founded Red Oak Kennels, has raised more field trial champions than any other kennel in Virginia. We are both respected breeders of registered Walker foxhounds. Our foxhounds are treated well. They are fed and watered twice a day. They are bathed when needed. They are wormed every three weeks and are up to date on their vaccinations.
They “work” one day each week in packs of six. I’d like to take this opportunity to invite the public to attend a foxhound field trial. A bench show will be held September 4 at the Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises. The field trial will be held September 5, 6 and 7. Directions to the cast can be obtained at the bench show.
