Another search Saturday turned up no leads to the Aug. 2 disappearance of Judith Lynne DeMaria on the W&OD Trail’s bike path near Sterling, police said.

The only evidence found so far, three pools of human blood, has not yet been identified, but police believe it was Ms. DeMaria’s, Sheriff John R. Isom said.

“Judi” DeMaria, 27, a tennis instructor and sales representative at Capitol Courts Club, left work on Glenn Drive at II a.m. nearly two weeks ago for her routine midday walk. She was last seen heading west at the Broad Run bridge by a park ranger and another person on the trail that day, Sheriffs Investigator L.W. McDonald said.

The blood — “definitely a fair amount of blood,” Sheriff Isom said — was found approximately 100 yards west of the bridge out of sight of the trail behind a tall hedge of trees and brush, a witness at the scene said.

While lab tests have not returned yet, neither has any information been found to identify the blood type of Ms. DeMaria, police said. Her family has contacted doctors she saw dating back to her birth in a California hospital.

Loudoun sues compensation board

Loudoun County officials formally filed suit in Circuit Court Aug. 2 against the State Compensation Board, seeking thousands of dollars in salaries and expenses that the board denied to the county sheriffs department.

Assistant County Attorney Daniel J. Travostino said last week that officials will go to Richmond, with two members of the Board of Supervisors, for an administrative hearing with the compensation board, which sets state funding for local constitutional officers.

If Sheriff John R. Isom isn’t satisfied after the hearing, Mr. Travostino said, then he can appeal to the courts. No date has been set for the hearing, he said last week.
