of Mr. Ashford (H. A.) Wood and Bill was taken to the Poor Farm. Poor Farm down on Rt. 231 was at that time overseen by Mr. Randy Jenkins. This was about 1908 and Bill was between seven and eight years old.
Incidentally, records found in the Rappahannock clerk’s office show that Mr. H. A. Wood was allotted $3 for taking “Will Jett” to Poor Farm. It is not known if Bill received the usual amount of $1 per month for his sustenance. It is doubtful since he was a minor then and his overseer probably was given extra payment to take care of him.
At any rate, Bill had a kind of home, food and perhaps light chores there. As Bill stated in the 1983 interview, “I stayed there, I reckon, a year or more, at least two years.”
Everyone I’ve ever talked to swore that Bill Martin was the oldest person they knew. Even my greatgrandfather, who would now be 105, said Bill was older than himself. But,
