Today is the day this country celebrates our victory over the Japanese forces which brought World War II to an end some 40 years ago.
Forty years ago, we danced in the streets, breathed a deep sigh of relief that the fighting in places far away had ended. In this country, we knew that V-J Day, as it became known, would soon signal the end of rationing, or collecting newspapers and old tin cans.
We also knew that our loved ones would be coming home to stay.
But not all of them did.
In our fight against the Axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan, more American soldiers lost their lives than in any war before or since.
