• August is the time to fertilize your strawberries. On plants set out this spring, apply four to six ounces of ammonium nitrate (33% actual nitrogen) or 12-18 oz. of 10-10-10 per 25 feet of row. Spread uniformly in a band 14 inches wide over the row when the foliage is dry. Brush fertilizer off leaves to avoid leaf bum. For plants in the second year of growth, increase the application rate to six to eight ozs. or 18 to 24 ozs. of 10-10-10 per 25 feet.
• Select a good site for spring flower bulbs. For daffodils dig the soil 12 inches deep in a sunny location. Work in bone meal and peat moss.
