More than 10,000 tourists have driven the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park in July than in the same month one year ago, according to estimates by the National Park Service.
The Service estimated that 271,826 visitors entered the park in this July, an increase over the 261,505 who entered in the same month last year.
Similarly, traffic for the first seven months of 1985 is up over the same period last year. The Drive has been seen a 3.86% increase this year when 945,815 cars entered the park. Some 910,704 entered the Drive in the first seven months of last year.
Additionally, the number of overnight guests increased this year over last. In July, 88,451 ovemighters stayed in the park, compared to 69,028 the same month a year ago. However, the number of overnighters in 1985 is only 8,000 higher than in the first seven months of last year.
At Big Meadows, the highest recorded temperature was 82 degrees, the low temperature last month was a cool 46 degrees. The rainfall for the month was 7.19 inches.
