Fruits are the answer to a nagging sweet tooth. Enjoy fresh strawberries dolloped with one tablespoon of real sour cream, heavily laden with vanilla extract. Use the last of the season’s navel oranges peeled, sliced crosswise and marinated in apple juice that has been steeped with fresh ginger. Bing cherries, grapes, cantaloupe and fresh pineapple are simply wonderful served solo.

The grain group is usually the one dieters decide to leave out completely. That’s too bad, because they are missing the best sodrce of energy-packed carbohydrates, plus B-vitamins. Half-cup servings of rice or pasta, instead of a plateful, will allow you to include these foods in a well balanced, low-calorie diet. Be sure to choose enriched cereals and breads, which are good sources of iron.

The versatility of dairy products allows you to add so much variety and good taste to a sensible meal plan. Choose Mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, sour cream, unflavored yogurt, low-fat cottage cheese, skim and buttermilk and ice milk to create low-calorie meals that really satisfy. Like the other food groups, the serving size is the critical consideration.

And, since you’re going to have this beautiful body by summer, you may want to show it off in Florida. The American Dairy Association and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is sponsoring a Virginia dairy recipe contest to be held June 20 in Roanoake. Top prize is roundtrip fare and hotel accommodations for two people for four days and three nights in Florida. For more information on how to enter the contest, write to Dairy Contest, VDACS, P.O. Box 1163, Room 703, Richmond, Va. 23209.
