oi our local iarmers are well educated. Many have a high school diploma, and some, a college degree. Most have a generous amount of common sense (which can’t be taught). This enables them to survive difficult situations. These same situations are rarely caused by “inadequate education.”
Poor economic management is the exception rather than the rule with respect to the farmer’s financial situation. The circumstances that are contributing to the situation are as follows:
— The high value of the U.S. dollar has all but eliminated the American farmer from foreign export markets.
— Fuel, fertilizer, chemicals, equipment and labor costs have increased tremendously in the past fifteen years.
— Prices paid to the farmer for beef, pork, corn, soybeans, etc., have generally remained constant or decreased.
