The Irish are not the only ones blessed with a heaping of good luck. Virginia cooks competing in the lucky seventh annual Virginia Championship Chili Cookoff May 3 at the Roanoke City Farmers Market will be trying their luck at the new grand prize for the top bowl of red. In addition to the traditional $500 cash prize, the 1986 Virginia Chili Champ will receive one round trip air fare from Roanoke to Los Angeles, Calif., plus hotel accomodations in Lancaster, Calif., to represent Virginia in the World Championship Chili Cookoff October 26,1986.
To enter this exciting contest sponsored by the Roanoke Area Market Association, send your best chili recipe, along with your name, address, phone number and some information about yourself to: Chili ’86, P.O. Box 13814, Roanoke, Va. 24034 by March 31, 1986. The top 50 finalists will be notified by mail after the deadline.
True chili, as defined by the International Chili Society which sanctions the Virginia cookoff, is any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, various spices and other ingredients with the exception of beans and pasta products which are strictly forbidden. Chili must be cooked within a maximum of four hours. Finalists must prepare their chili at the cookoff. No ingredient may be pre-cooked or treated in any way prior to the preparation period
