Tara Welty, a senior at Wakefield, has received one of only 45 scholarships to be awarded by the Virginia Scholars Program. Tara, the daughter of Diane Welty and the late Frederick Welty of Washington, was notified recently of the $12,000 scholarship offer.
The Virginia Scholars Program (VSP) was created in 1983 to foster academic excellence and to retain outstanding youth in Virginia through awards based on both scholarship and achievement. VSP scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to Virginia students who enroll in a four-year Virginia college or university.
Applications for the VSP are evaluated by a screening committee which selects 100 finalists, who are then judged by an award selection committee chaired by a member of the State Council of Higher Education.
