Gypsy moth populations in Shenandoah National Park have reached the level that management actions are needed to control these exotic pests in some of the park’s visitor use areas. Acting Park Superintendent Gerald Tays states that, “the National Park Service finds it necessary to exercise the full range of control techniques this year in order to protect these areas from severe impacts. Extremely high gypsy moth larva populations are expected thi^spring in Mathews Arm Campground, the Dickey Ridge Developed Area, and the Elkwallow Picnic An*. These areas must be treated in order to keep them open for public use and to protect area resources from high levels of tree mortality.”
The park’s first Gypsy Moth Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan was approved in 1984. In 1985, several IPM strategies were used to deal with the presence of this pest. This year, according to Acting Superintendent Tays, the application of both biological and chemical pesticides is proposed to be included in the control program.
Protection of Foliage and Related Resources: This entails the treatment of approximately 20 acres in the Dickey Ridge Developed Area and the Elkwallow Picnic Area with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a biological pesticide. Treatment will be done with ground spray equipment. Approximately 100 acres encompassing the Mathews Arm Campground is scheduled to be treated with Diflubenzuron (DimilinR), a chemical pesticide. Bt is not being considered for use in the campground because the expected larva population is well beyond the effective range of the product. DimilinR is the most environmentally-sound pesticide available that can be effective in this case.
