at the contest. The only exceptions are canned or bottled tomatoes, peppers, pepper sauce and beverages used as ingredients. All ingredients for the chili, including cooking utensils and camp stoves, must be provided by the finalists. A minimum of one gallon of chili is required for preparation at the cookoff. A $20 entry fee will be required from finalists in addition to membership in, or application pending, to the International Chili Society by May 3.
And, even if your chili isn’t lucky enough to end up in one of the five winning places, you might be rewarded for your showmanship, booth design, best use of pork in your recipe or turn out to be the People’s Choice. Five places will be awarded to the cooking teams that display the best showmanship and the most creative booths. The Virginia Pork Industry Board will sponsor the Hog Heaven Award for the recipe which makes the best use of pork products. And the Virginia Cattlewomen will sponsor the People’s Choice Award presented to chili the crowd votes best on cookoff day.
The Virignia Championship Chili Cookoff can boast six straight years of perfect weather and great times. As the lucky seventh cookoff rolls around, you can definitely count on a great day of fun and festivities. The chances of perfect weather another year — well, it will be left to the luck of Virginia Chiliheads.
