Hedges can receive their first pruning this month. As you prune, be sure to leave the base of the plant wider than the top. This allows sunlight to get to the bottom of the plant, creating a full, dense hedge.
You may wish to try some new, unusual vegetables in your garden this year. A few that can grow successfully in this area are bok choy, Jerusalem artichoke, kohlrabi, leeks and horseradish.
To extend the asparagus harvest, remove the mulch from only half the bed at first. The sunlight will encourage these plants to sprout more quickly. In 2 or 3 weeks when shoots appear in the mulched half, carefully remove the remaining mulch.
Boxwood may be moved now; do not plant them deeper than they were previously planted. Trim and fertilize established boxwood before new growth starts, but do not cultivate under boxwood since their roots are shallow and may be damaged.
