speed horses will still probably take this way rather than risk running up and down the mountain through the woods. The short course is over the mountain both ways which should give the foxhunters and tougher types of horse a better chance of winning.”
The course is between three and and three and a half miles, according to Mr. Weslow. Terrain varies from fields and pastures at the base of Mason Mountain to woodland on the sides and top of the mountain. Competitors will also have to cross the Thornton River twice, whichever route they pick.
Also new this year for Rappahannock’s old-fashioned are a couple of extra winners’ categories. Besides the usual winners trophy and a trophy for the first member of the opposite sex to the winner to finish, this year the hunt will also give trophies for the first heavyweight rider, weighing over 190 pounds with tack, to finish and the first junior rider (under 16 years old) to finish.
There will be an organized walk around the course March 19 at 3 p.m. Competitors are free to walk and explore the course on their own at any time, however, said Mr. Weslow. Entries are $10.
