Joining
There are certain organizations in every community that deserve widespread support. We believe that in this county the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community is such a candidate.
Formed about four years ago, RAAC has contributed to the cultural enrichment of Rappahannock in a number of important ways. The film series, shown every weekend, is a valuable asset not just because it is the county’s only theatre, but because it shows good, critically acclaimed films.
RAAC sponsors numerous other events throughout the year including plays, literary readings, art exhibits, and musical performances. These enormously enrich this community.
The organization also promotes art skills exchange with workshops in various disciplines including photography and music. RAAC’s performances and workshops have also been extended to the county’s schools.
Last Friday evening Lavinia Currier, author of Heart of the Garden, spoke to the Gay Street Theatre’s sold-out audience about the film after its showing. Because of a weather problem, her plane was delayed in New York which caused the cancellation of her scheduled appearance before students at the Rappahannock County Elementary School that afternoon. RAAC director Anne Stephens is re-scheduling that appearance. This is one small, but important, example of RAAC’s commitment to serve the entire community.
Because the organization has a non-profit basis, it derives some income from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. However, most of its money is generated by memberships. This money is necessary for RAAC to maintain its excellent programs. It is also necessary for important renovations to the Gay Street Theatre where the performances are held.
March has been designated by the organization as its “membership drive month.” The $10 individual membership entitles you to a discount on the films * advance bulletins on the movies and a newsletter. Information about live performances, which occur about once a month, is also sent to members.
Becoming a member of RAAC affords another reward, albeit less tangible. It offers members the opportunity to come together as a community for the enjoyment of programs that would not be possible without this fine organization.
