Over this past year, my little boy and I have enjoyed discovering the children’s corner of our county library. Recently, we have found that rabbit stories are just right for rainy spring naptimes.
Foolish Rabbit’s Big Mistake by Rafe Martin and Ed Young (1985), is an ancient Indian Jakata tale or story of one of Buddha’s earlier “births.” Jakata stories like this one have been told for more than 2,000 years throughout Asia and are one of the great sources of Western folklore. Foolish Rabbit’s Big Mistake is probably the oldest version of the Chicken-Little or Sky Is Falling story. The tale is told by Rafe Martin in a clear, simple manner. A little rabbit is dozing beneath an apple tree when he hears a loud crash. Without investigating, he races off, shouting, “The earth is breaking up!” This causes panic among the animals of the forest. At last a calm and intelligent lion figures out the foolish rabbit’s mistake. The intelligence of the golden lion and the courage of the little rabbit in explaining his mistake show the animals that jumping to conclusions can lead to trouble.
