“I didn’t do it for the grade. I did it for the fun of it,” student Debbie Wood commented about her math project. Debbie is a student in Frieda Herman’s math class at Rappahannock County High School.
Algebra and geometry teacher Frieda Herman discussed the educational criteria pertaining to her classes’ projects.
“Their only requirement was that the project had to pertain to math in some form and they could go from there,” stated Mrs. Herman.
“One of my purposes for assigning this project was to allow the students to do something of their own that would affect their six week grade instead of relying solely on tests,” Mrs. Herman added. “Another reason was I like to see where their creativity will take them.”
Mrs. Herman told about some of the projects. “Some neat games were made. I had one girl who baked geometrically shaped cookies. We had some nicely done mobiles and posters.” Mrs. Herman continued, “A research report was allowed for those who didn’t feel necessarily very creative.”
Mrs. Herman explained her grading criteria. “They had to show that they spent some time doing it . since it was a project. I look at it more as how it pertains to math. Did I feel that the student really researched the subject area.”
“This is the second year that some of the students have done projects for me and I’ve been very pleased with their growth in their projects,” commented Mrs. Herman. “I’m very pleased wtih the creativity that the students use to fulfill
