She said that the shortfall in feed crops is worsened by the fact that pastureland was not usable for grazing during much of the summer, forcing cattlemen to use feed grain which would normally be saved for the winter months.
Ms. Henry added that ASCS has a program of emergency feed subsidies for livestock producers who have been affected by ffie drought. “We’re taking applications almost daily,” for the emergency feed program. “People are coming in . . . from all over the county. ”
Ms. Henry explained that to apply for the feed program, which pays up to one-half the cost of grain purchased for feed (not to exceed five cents per pound), the livestock producer must have completed his feed grain harvest. “We make an inventory of his available supplies,” she explained, “and then calculate his needs through April 30, 1987 (about the time cattle normally return to pasture).” The producer can purchase any type of feed required, she said.
