David Thornhill, the former Planning Commissioner from Stonewall-Hawthorne who lives across the street from Mr. Von Fange, said he had no problem with any noise from the shop. “The ordinance says light commercial belongs in the villages. I hope you’ll pass this . . . maybe with a few restrictions.”
Commissioner David Fannon suggested a restriction against displaying furniture on the highway, a requirement for fire extinguishers and a limitation on hours of machinery operation to Monday through Saturday between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
“It seems the major concern is expansion,” noted Commissioner John Clark, asking Mr. Von Fange if he would object to having the number of shop employees restricted to five.
“I certainly wouldn’t want my freedom restricted by limiting the number of employees I can have,” the furniture maker replied.
Mr. Reynolds asked for a condition requiring compliance with fire and safety codes. When several of the Planning Commissioners countered that this lay outside their purview, zoning administrator John McCarthy suggested having the building inspector check the site for fire suppression.
“I don’t think we need to get into that,” replied Commissioner Newbill Miller.
“I don’t think it’s a function of this body to do that,” agreed Mr. Wood.
