Bay cleanup disputed
RICHMOND — William Ruckelshaus’ statement that Virginia is not making sufficient progress in its Chesapeake Bay cleanup program is misleading, says state Sen. Joseph V. Gartlan Jr.
Mr. Ruckelshaus, former administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, said “Virginia needs to get its act together and get moving” on the cleanup.
Sen. Gartlan, a key figure in the state’s bay restoration efforts, countered Saturday that Mr. Ruckelshaus misread the situation.
“What does Virginia need to get its act together on?” Sen. Gartlan asked during a University of Richmond symposium on the bay.
Sen. Gartlan, a Fairfax County Democrat, said Mr. Ruckelshaus’ remarks reminded him of the current advertising campaign for Isuzu cars. The satirical ads depict an announcer who makes outrageously exaggerated claims about the autos while captions supply the facts.
Objections to the cleanup, Sen. Gartlan said, are “nothing new. ... That’s been part of the problem we’ve had to deal with from the beginning.”
