At Friday's meeting, Mr. Gilkey told the board that the site is 3.3 miles off Rt. 211, and .7 miles back a wagon road to the 40 acre tract. Mr. Gilkey urged anyone interested in the landfill situation “to ride out there and take a look - but I advise you to go in a pickup truck, not a car.” He added that there are “30 or 31 homes in the area,” apparently alluding to the opposition which could be expected from landowners in the vicinity of any site mentioned as a possible landfill.
He added that as dry as the weather has been there are several deep holes with mud still in the bottom in the access road, which might indicate that the site is poorly drained.
Supervisor Miller replied that “I hope that you don’t rule it out (the Striker property) without further consideration.”
As the supervisors focused their discussion on the question of a recommendation to the state on the suitability of the Lee property as a landfill site, Supervisor Miller reiterated his opposition to the proposal. “Gentlemen, you know my position on this location. I hope you don’t recommend this location until the site studies are in . . . Don’t close the door on other locations.”
“Are you opposed to further testing at the Lee site?” Mr. Estes asked.
“No, I’m not opposed because hydrologic studies may prove the points my constituents make.” Mr. Miller replied.
