Rex Slack comes at landscape from a unique approach in his “Bethlehem, West Virginia” sculpture which is a memorial to a land overwhelmed by larger forces (floods and coal companies). An iconic hollow structure, the piece contains three miniatures - one of the company town known as Bethlehem in its heyday with families inside warm houses on a moonlit night by a creek; one of the interior of a house after the town has been abandoned; and one of a town inundated by flood. The exterior contains objects that would have been found inside the homes of an abandoned town - a plastic bird, a picture of Jesus walking on the water, tiles from a bathroom. There is a sense of endurance along with the sense of struggle in this remarkable work.
