One of the finest crops of Virginia-grown gourmet peanuts is being harvested now, says Susan L. Wiley, marketing specialist with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Peanuts are one of the few crops that have not been drastically affected by the summer drought. Consequently, consumers will be able to find plentiful, economical supplies of freshly harvested peanuts in supermarkets and speciality shops. While peanuts are plentiful, think to serve them anytime you’re hungry for a snack. Here are just a few times that peanuts are appropriate - you’ll think of more.

- Take roasted in-shell peanuts to the football game this weekend. They will be cheaper than the ones you buy in the stadium. Be sure to pack enough peanuts for the before and after game tailgate socializing.

-For a Sunday drive through the countryside to admire autumn’s beauty, take honey coated or unsalted peanuts to munch with fresh crisp Virginia apples.

-When the weather begins to chill, plan to snuggle up with someone special by the first fire of the season with a slice of peanut pie and a gourmet coffee.

- Brunch is a fashionable way to entertain, plus it’s easy for the hostess. Plan to serve hearty autumn foods, including peanut bran muffins, cinnamon peanut coffee cake and peanut and sausage stuffed acorn squash.

- Remember gorp - good old raisins and peanuts? Remember to take
