Nancy Reeve has said that she can probably name more than 34 one-year-olds, the total in that age group reported by school census enumerators. In addition, information from the school census is at odds with the tallies reached by U.S. Census takers six years earlier.)
Mr. Estabrook cited projections from the county’s comprehensive plan which put the year 2000’s population at an upper limit of 8,255 and a lower limit at 7,200. But noting the county’s tight controls on growth and development, he acknowledged that Rappahannock’s current population of around 6,200 is below the lower limit of 6,400 projected for 1985 in the comprehensive plan.
“I do think the people of this county treasure the low population as one of our assets,” said Supervisor Lane. “I don’t think they’re going to want to take the top off (land use controls) anytime soon.”
Asked again by Mr. Miller for what the recent school census showed, Mr. Estabrook reported that the number of school aged children in the county appears to be dropping by an average of ten per year.
