Toxaphene to
be banned
Farmers should check their chemical supplies for any toxaphene products as the chemical will be banned in December.
“The pesticide toxaphene cannot be used lawfully after December 31,” said Michael J. Weaver, Extension coordinator in the chemical, drug and pesticide unit at Virginia Tech. “Anyone who has some of the chemical after that date may find it difficult and expensive to get rid of it under federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act regulations.”
He said producers should either use toxaphene for its presently lawful labeled use or find someone who can before that date.
If so labeled, a toxaphene product still can be lawfully used in Virginia until December 31 on soybeans for sickle pod control, on no-till com for armyworm, com bilbug, flea beetle and webworm control, and on cowpeas for cowpea curculio, cutworm, darkling ground beetle, lygus bug and southern green stink bug control.
