Continued from page 1 intendent Estabrook reminded the supervisors last Thursday.
Reauthorization is necessary because, in drafting the county’s 198687 budget, the supervisors rejected accountant Wally Cox’s suggestion to include the Literary Loan as expected revenue. To add the $1.5 million now will require a public hearing and budget amendment.
Worried about time constraints, the School Board members agreed to seek a joint meeting with the supervisors to review the capital outlay proposal and to request that the required public hearing be scheduled as soon as possible.
Thursday night’s informational session began with a slide show-. The screen flashed with photographs of students eating lunch on the hall floor, students crowded around long tables in inadequately equipped science classrooms, a lunch line snaking far down the corridor, stored audiovisual equipment filling the aisles in the library, a guidance secretary’s “office” at the end of a table stuck in a corner of the library, the library’s single carrel for independent study, a loft above the industrial arts class and the waiting area of the crowded front office taken over by stored text books.
In a running commentary on the most pressing needs, Assistant Superintendent Tom Campbell noted that:
• the State’s Standards of Learning mandate requires that 50 percent of class time in science be devoted to “hands-on” experiments, an impossibility in rooms without water, gas and individual lab stations.
• even with two lunch shifts, the 90 seat cafeteria is not adequate for the high school’s 375 students, who are forced to eat in empty classrooms, halls and on the ball field bleachers.
