At one point, Carter and a man identified only as “Ralph” began arguing, she said. Carter pulled a knife and stabbed “Ralph,” who then stopped fighting and sat down and mended the wound with a needle and thread, Ms. Watts told the court.
After that incident, Ms. Watts said, Carter left the trailer and got into an argument with Gatewood outside. The two began fighting and Gatewood was hit twice before the fight was broken up. Ms. Watts said that Gatewood then told several people that “I’m going to get him [Carter].”
Gatewood then, according to the version of events pieced together by Ms. Watts, borrowed a car and drove to Rappahannock County. He broke into his mother’s house in Gid Brown Hollow, where he took a pistol and two knives.
