Cheri Woodard, who turned the lessons she got from Flossie into her own successful business originally built on herbs, adds a chapter to the book from Flossie’s notes on growing and using herbs. Mrs. Williamson would have approved: “If you don’t have an herb garden you have missed some fun, and delightful flavors too, because FRESH herbs are different!” she wrote.
And her face, wrinkled by years of smiles and laughter, would have beamed at Suzanne Parrish’s calligraphy and Mary Parrish’s sketches. “The perfect accompaniment!” you can hear her exclaim, with the characteristic exclamation point that punctuated all her discoveries and advice.
The Friends of Flossie are quick to point out the few typographical errors and misspellings and even quicker with their apologies for the imstakes. “We couldn’t afford a publisher. If we’d had a publisher, all of the little errors would have been caught,” explained Frances Lyne. “We took it to a printer and a printer just prints what you give him.”
Flossie would have pooh-poohed the worries over glitches. What’s important is that' this wonderful little book is here, produced by loving friends of a dear lady.
The Friends financed the project and trying to guess what Flossie would have wanted, they have dedicated the proceeds from the sale of Flossie’s Recipes to programs which enrich the lives the elderly.
“But you know, that’s already happened,” said Quita Parrish. “Almost all of us who worked on the book are elderly, and it was so enjoyable. Our lives have been enriched immeasurably.”
The Friend# of Flossie invite everyone to tea at the Trinity Church Parish Hall this Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. Refreshments mil be from “Flossie’8 Recipes — Wonderful World of Herbs.” Copies of the book will be available.
