The most exciting change cited by Mr. Forst is the new Accelerated Refund Program. “We have worked very closely with the Governor’s Office to develop a new way to reduce significantly the amount of time it takes to get refunds out,” he said.

The Accelerated Refund Program will allow Virginia taxpayers who meet certain criteria to get their refunds in two to three weeks. If conditions of filing are met, taxpayers can attach a simple three-line form to their tax return that will speed their return through the system. It is expected that approximately 800,000 of 1.8 million refund filers will be able to take advantage of this new program.

Commissioner Forst noted that the Tax Department is monitoring new technologies to continue to enhance the efficiency of tax return processing. Future plans include greater use of magnetic tape in place of some of the tax forms currently required, and the electronic filing of ! income tax returns.
