The first thing I noticed when I walked into Middle Street Gallery was a photograph entitled “Teapot Rock.” It is an exact reproduction of a photo taken in 1869 by William Henry Jackson which hangs directly below Tim Kilby’s photo. I was struck by the similarity of the images and how insignificant 121 years is in this place: the American West.
“The West: A Way of Seeing” is a collection of large-format black and white landscapes taken during Mr. Kilby’s travels through the West from 1980-87.
There is a feeling of power and preservation - of freezing that second of a unique place for the record - which arises from the heart, experience and mastery of Mr. Kilby’s photographs. He chooses his vantage points with an exceptional sense of balance and sensitivity.
