“Hunting Madness” is a “disease” that overcomes many outdoorsmen this time of year, according to Ronald L. Pitts, program director of the Virginia Affiliate of the National Society to Prevent Blindness. Every year foolish acts by “afflicted" hunters cause numerous shooting accidents.
An estimated 400 hunters die by accident each year. An additional 2,400 are injured and thousands of domestic animals are unintentionally .shot. According to Mr. Pitts, four of the major causes-of these tragedies are:
• The victim is out of the shooter's sight.
• The victim moves into the line of fire.
• The victim is covered by the shooter’s swing on game.
*• The victim is mistaken for game. .■
Mr. Pitts noted, “Hunters decide when to squeeze the trigger primarily based on what they see or think they see. The quality of vision is the key factor in many accidental shootings.”
