We have solved the Puzzle of the Forgotten Indenture, bi#t, not the Mystery jrf the hissing Minutes. ^■FuZile arid Mystefy'Cdncerh a little church that lies north of the Hazel River, a mile west of Route 231 from Sperryville to Madison.
The Puzzle of the Forgotten Indenture was about the donation of land on which to build the Piedmont Baptist Church. For perhaps more than a century no one has known who gave the land, when, or on what terms, nor could the record be found.
Today we know that Lloyd D. Browning and John S. Partlow granted the land in 1845. Where their farms adjoined, each deeded a portion, for a total of nearly an acre. Provisions of the newly discovered indenture mark Browning and Partlow as thoughtful, far-seeing, pious men.
