West. This negative, larger than the 35mm size used by most amateur photographers, produces a print with a finer resolution and greater degree of detail.
Mr. Kilby is also obviously familiar with exposure and the workings of the camera. The fine detail drew me into his photographs and their rare compositions held my attention.
As I moved through the exhibition, I was drawn to the photograph of a forest on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. It is so specific that I could feel the pine needles under my feet and smell the loam and scent of the pine forest.
In the untitled photograph of a fallen-down bank building in Ryolite, Nevada, Mr. Kilby’s sense of light and balance are extraordinary. From the shadows of the buildings in the foreground to the clouds in the background, it feels as if he waited for days for each element to reach its proper place.
