The Pop Quiz competition presented every fall by WVPT Channel 51, the public television station broadcasting from Harrisonburg, features teams of four frojn 32 schools, large and small, public and private. Rappahannock entered the ranks six years ago, noted Mr. Flinchum, the RCHS English teacher who with French teacher Cindy Wayland has sponsored and directed tfie Pop Quizzers. “I credit Mr. Chappell in his earlier reincarnation as principal with accepting the challenge - and passing it on to us!”
“We’re the only team, in town that allows every student to try out,” Mr. Flinchum continued, explaining how the RCHS final four are chosen. The kids are given a 40-question written test, and then the top 30 scorers advance to the pressure of the buzzer tests, playing against and eliminating each other until the four best are left. '
Rappahannock is also the first team to include eighth graders, Mr. Flinchum continued, recalling that the infamous Jonathan Watson started as a “beastie”
