Carter was shot once in the chest, according to Lt. W. R. Jenkins, an investigator with the Madison County Sheriffs Department. After attempts by the Madison Rescue Squad to revive Carter with CPR failed, he was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. A. E. Powell, the Madison County medical examiner.

After the shooting, Ms. Watts said, Gatewood hitched a ride back to Rappahannock County. After an investigation, Madison County issued warrants for his arrest on Saturday.
