Board members Paul Nichols and Bryant Lee volunteered to accompany Dr. Gahgel and assistant superintendent Robert Chappell on a tour of gymnasiums in neighboring counties to assess the merits of plastic versus wood bleachers and the product quality of the various companies bidding to supply Rappahannock.
The gymnasium bleachers and seats for the new auditorium are the last of the “big ticket” items not funded after the low bid for the high school expansion came in more than $168,000 over the literary loan awarded for the project. Even after cutting those items, the project was still $40,000 over budget.
At last Tuesday’s meeting, the board authorized Dr. Gangel to proceed with soliciting bids for the auditorium seating. “We’re really not sure of the cost. It will help to get bids in so we know what we’re talking about,” he said, adding that estimates put the cost of new seating at around $48,700 and reconstructed
