They were featured by Dan* Rather on the CBS Evening News earlier this winter, and now the acclaimed Cornerstone Theater Company is coming to Rappahannock County, thanks to the Virginia Commission for the Arts’ selection of Rappahannock as one of only six sites for its new Arts on the Road program.
In its second year, Arts on the Road brings professionals from the fields of theater, music, and the visual arts to communities outside the Commonwealth’s major metropolitan areas. The artists spend two days performing, conducting workshops, and giving lectures and demonstrations in schools, parks and civic clubs.
The Virginia Commission for the Arts provides the artists and underwrites their fees; the sponsoring community provides room, board, and appropriate performance and workshop facilities. The Commission’s selection criterion is simple: to be chosen as a sponsor, a community must have demonstrated enthusiasm for the arts.
The selection of Rappahannock as one of this year’s six sponsors is recognition of the local commitment to promoting arts and artists, said Anne Stephens, director of the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community, which made the program request on the county’s behalf.
Rappahannock could be host for three from Arts on the Road’s six offerings. In addition to Cornerstone Theater, which will perform here Feb. 12 and 13, RAAC selected cellist Vsevolod Lezhnev and weaver Nancy Garretson, both scheduled this spring.
