Tentative figures indicate that there were 101 fewer fatalities in 1987 than in 1986. As of December 31, 1,017 people were reported killed as a result of motor vehicle crashes in 1987, compared to 1,118 in 1986.
“I truly hope the reduction in fatalities this past year is a result of more people wearing their safety belts,” said Colonel Suthard. “Let’s remember to buckle up this year so we may look forward to even fewer fatalities in 1988.” Virginia’s seat belt law took effect Jan. 1.
