VDOT’s minimum standard for paving secondary roads indoles regrading the present surface and widening to 18 feet. When the shoulders and ditches are added the total roadway prism reaches 30 feet in width. This requires removal of most of the trees, stone walls and split rail fences that give our country roads their historic appearance and keeps the traffic speed down.
