sures for land division and increased population because of the paved roadways. The historic roads will no longer be suitable for horses, and the character of the countryside will be changed. This may be so critical that our county’s comprehensive plan should designate roads to remain unpaved.
Once a road is paved the only repair is more pavement, and as we have fewer dirt roads there will be less need to keep the equipment and personnel that now maintain them.
We have the option to keep our dirt roads and maintain them with the conviction that dirt roads are beautiful. With this approach we can lower speed limits to 25 mph so they are safer, less dusty and will require less maintenance. If we conserve our dirt roads VDOT could keep and improve the equipment and personnel they have.
Funds that would have been used for paving could be used to recondition the road base so periodic grading will be more effective. The use of dust retardants (such as liquid calcium chloride) might well encourage additional public support for saving the beauty of our dirt roadways.
