Residents of the Midwest and Northeast snow belt are always amazed at how snowstorms in the Mid-Atlantic region seem to bring the whole area to a grinding halt.
The usual excuse is that the people who live in this area aren’t used to driving in snow, so consequently it’s more difficult for us to get around in the snow.
Actually, that’s only part of the reason why snowstorms seem to bring Virginia’s Piedmont and the Metropolitan D. C. area to a slippery, sliding standstill. The other factors have a sound basis in meteorology, according to Dr. Pat Michaels, Virginia's state climatologist.
For one thing. Dr. Michaels said, a major winter storm tends to bring more accumulation in the Mid-Atlantic region than in the Midwest. The reason is the added moisture available as the storm tracks up the coast from the south. The counter-clockwise circulation around a low pressure storm center draws moist air in from the ocean, pushing it ahead of the storm’s track and replenishing the moisture lost in precipitation which falls farther south.
The track of those major storms is the same as that notorious New England phenomenon: the nor’easter. (The name derives from the direction in which the storm travels, not the direction from whence it came.)
